Mountains have, for a long time, blown our minds, as they are imposing giants that surpass the clouds. They are not only natural phenomena but also represent broad historical and cultural heritage. Today, we are going to set out to discover the ten highest peaks of the world, each with a unique natural and historical background.
- Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters)
This mountain range is nicknamed “the Roof of the World” and demarcates the border between Nepal and China. It was first climbed by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, and it still gets the best of mountaineers who have come to seek the challenges associated with extreme conditions. Kangchenjunga’s commercial expeditions are less frequent compared to that of Everest because of the former’s remoteness and complex logistics constraints.
4. Lhotse (8,516 meters)
A partner to the South Face of Everest in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range, Lhotse is one of the hardest climbing routes to conquer in the Himalayan Range. The first achievements with the summit were in 1956 during a Swiss expedition which also got on top of Everest. Lhotse is typically climbed in conjunction with Everest because they are nearby, but its steeper pitches and technical difficulties really make it a challenge on its own. Climbers who try to conquer Lhotse also have to face the hazardous Khumbu Icefall, which makes the climbing process even more dangerous.
5. Makalu (8,481 meters)
The fifth-highest mountain worldwide, Makalu in Nepal is named for its dark pyramid shape that brings the caption of “the black giant”. It was conquered by a French team in 1955 and is considered as demanding to climb due to its harsh weather conditions and isolation. Unlike Cho Oyu, an 8000-meter peak which is quite accessible, Makalu’s technical terrain and unpredictable weather conditions result in fewer people skimming to the top.
6. Cho Oyu (8,201 meters)
This peak known as the “Turquoise Goddess” that gained its name due to its peculiar color under the rays of the sun (cho oyu), the peak at the height of 8,201m and situated on the Nepal-China border, is the sixth among the top peaks in the world. It is one of the easiest 8,000-meter climbs, which is why it is quite favored by the more experienced mountaineers who want to reach the top of their very first “death zone” peak. An attractive label for the ascent doesn’t mean the mountain is easy. High altitude and the big risk of avalanches are still important factors to be taken into account by those who want to climb the summit.
7. Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters)
The “White Mountain” of Nepal, Dhaulagiri, is famous for its marvelous vertical rise and the features of the Khumbu Icefall. In 1960, a European team was the first to ascend Dhaulagiri, a massive peak with intense storms that often break the toughest mountaineers. Instead of the South Col route, Dhaulagiri has several faces and ridges which offer different climbing opportunities, attracting advanced climbers who cherish technical challenges.
8. Manaslu (8,163 meters)
Manaslu means “Mountain of the Soul” and is a sacred place to walk the path in Nepal. Climbers came here as early as the 1950s. The first successful ascent was reached in 1956 by the Japanese expedition. The slopes of Manaslu are notorious for active avalanches and that is why climbing this peak is regarded as a serious expedition. Contrary to the commercialized enterprises on Everest, Manaslu expeditions are usually smaller and more geared towards the seasoned climbers who are on a quest to explore the culture while climbing.
9. Annapurna I (8,091 meters)
Situated in Annapurna massif of Nepal, Annapurna I demonstrates one of the deadliest among the world’s highest peaks over 8,000 meters.- the highest fatality record. Initially encountered by a French expedition to conquer the peak in 1950, the mountain with its dangers of its treacherous slopes, unpredictable weather patterns, and dangerous ice falls have been responsible for many fatalities. Climbers who attempt Annapurna I face a difficult path between ice and rock; therefore, the mountain is an equal rival even for many experienced climbers.
10. Nanga Parbat (8,126 meters)
Nicknamed “The Killer Mountain” because of its dangerous terrain with a high rate of deaths, Nanga Parbat, the world’s tenth highest mountain peak, is located in Pakistan. The Rupal Face, the mountain’s southwestern wall, is the world’s highest granite wall, making it a very difficult climb. Unlike the mountains where there exist established routes, Nanga Parbat is different as each climber faces a unique problem due to the constantly changing conditions caused by the glaciers. Despite all the dangers, the breathtaking magnificence of Nanga Parbat and the urge to conquer one of the toughest peaks that exist continue to attract skilled mountaineers.
